How the ‘Sherlock Hat’ Got Famous

When you think of Sherlock Holmes, what comes to mind? Today it might be Benedict Cumberbatch, but for more than a century prior the gentleman detective was defined by his distinctive costume. The story behind how the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle character became associated with his now-ubiquitous plaid cap is an interesting and surprising one. Rewire producer Maria Bartholdi chatted with Julia Acton of Guthrie Theater Costume Rentals about the history of the “deerstalker hat.”

Season 4 of “Sherlock” premieres Jan. 1. Check your local PBS station’s schedule for broadcast dates and times.
