Fred Rogers knew the value of signature style, sticking to his iconic cardigans, button-front shirts, ties, and Keds for virtually every episode of “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood.” (Did you know his mom hand-knit every one of his sweaters? Amazing.) On the anniversary of his historic testimony before the U.S. Senate, we thought we’d celebrate with a few Rogers-inspired outfits that will bring some neighborly inspiration to your spring wardrobe. Thanks for protecting public media, Fred! We miss you.
Here are six modern-day outfits inspired by everyone’s favorite neighbor.
Outfit #1: Sunshine on a Gray Day
Cardigans are a must for any Fred-derived ensemble, so start with a gray one. Add a white graphic tee with some red elements to echo the red in that tie, and jeans with a grayish cast. Finish the look with classic blue low-tops. Or if dresses are more your speed, pair a chambray one with a Peter Pan collar necklace to evoke the button-front look. Bring in the red with a belt, slip on some cute blue Keds, and don’t forget your cozy gray cardigan.
Outfit #2: We Love Neighbors of All Stripes (and Plaids)
Draw out the plaid in that bold tie by swapping in a shirt with a similar color scheme. To keep the look from getting too loud, opt for black jeans or pants and black slip-on sneakers. Make sure your plaid includes teal so you can top it all off with a Rogers-approved cardigan. Or grab a sleeveless button-front in oxford blue and a headband with a plaid flourish to pair with an open-front teal cardigan. Try cropped black pants and black kicks with white laces to mix things up.
Outfit #3: Red, White & Don’t Be Blue
It’s the red cardigan we all remember best, right? Pick one you love and pair with a blue tee featuring a black graphic to mirror the shirt and tie. Add gray jeans or chinos and try some leather sneakers for this look. Or go for gingham in a sassy shirtdress that pulls the blue from this outfit and opt for a scoop-neck red cardigan that will accommodate the shirt collar. Tack on a gray brooch to echo the slacks, and don’t forget the genuine article Keds Champions to complete your look.
