Here in America, we love our crime mysteries and procedural dramas. Law & Order, Law & Order: SVU, CSI, CSI: Miami, CSI: New York, CSI: Mankato, what have you. You can hardly find a major network without at least one blockbuster murder drama in a coveted primetime slot.
But the Brits do a pretty mean mystery themselves, and PBS isn’t one to be left out of the game – their long-running Sunday night MASTERPIECE Mystery! series is a welcome departure from the formulaic and often predictable network dramas. Over the years, Mystery! has featured a lot of interesting characters, from Ms. Marple to Poirot, but the latest stand-out is the long-running Inspector Lewis, a gritty, elegant and beautifully shot/styled modern BBC drama. And, just as many networks are ramping down their seasons and heading into summer fare, Inspector Lewis will premiere its sixth season on Sunday night on tpt 2. The show is smart, fresh and classy, something that, after seeing one too many Hawaii 5.0’s and NCIS: Los Angeles, I didn’t know was still possible.
In summary, and I think you’ll agree, Laurence Fox – the guy sure knows how to wear a coat.
When: Sunday, June 16 @ 8 PM on tpt 2
UPDATE: Chat with MASTERPIECE producers and other Mystery! fans tonight (6/17) at 7 p.m. during a special Ovee screening. Come on people! It’s the LAST season (probably/maybe/allegedly).
